The High Altar

The altar is adorned with a frontal appropriate to the colour of the season or feast, and with candles symbolising Christ as the light of the world.

Many people observe the custom of bowing their head slightly towards the High Altar as they enter and leave the church or pass in front of it, as a reminder of its significance. When the Christ is present on the altar in the Blessed Sacrament, the custom is to genuflect.
