Music is a central feature of our worship at All Saints.
The 9.30 mass on
Sundays and some feast days features a pipe organ and choir or cantor.
Other musical instruments such as trumpet and strings also feature
throughout the year.
There are many
opportunities to become involved. New members are
always welcome.
About the choirs
Motet choir
The motet choir
sings most Sundays at the 9.30am mass. It sings a psalm, a motet, and
leads the congregation in a fine selection of hymns. The turnover of repertoire is
fast so there's never a dull moment. This choir practices
on Thursday evenings from 6.30-7.30pm, and on Sundays from 9am.
People who can offer
an ongoing commitment of only one or two services per month are also
warmly encouraged to join this choir. Scholarships may be
available for suitable applicants.
Evensong choir
The beautiful cathedral-style evening service of choral evensong
takes place at 5pm on the fourth Sunday of every month from April to
September.
Evensong choir great
for people who don't "do" mornings! This choir gives you a really good
chance to sing some exciting and beautiful repertoire with low time commitment.
Evensong
dates in 2008: Sunday
25 May; Sunday 22 June; Sunday 22 July; Sunday 24 August;
Sunday 28 September. Rehearsals are held at 3pm on the day of the
service. Contact the director of music for more information.
Igitur Nos
Igitur Nos is a chamber choir which sings beautiful advanced works from the
sacred repertoire . This choir practices on
Monday evenings from 7.30-9.30pm. For more information, click here.
Cantors
Occasionally, a cantor (solo singer) leads the singing at
the 9.30am service when the choir is on holidays. They are paid a small honorarium.
Contact the Director of Music if you're interested.
Why join a church choir?
The church environment is an
excellent one in which to develop musical skills that are valuable far
beyond the church context.
-
Experience the thrill of singing great works of sacred
music in the context for which they were written
-
Develop sight-singing, vocal and ensemble skills in a
supportive environment
-
Experience the joy of music-making in a group.
All Saints is affiliated with the RSCM
Australia.
Concert venue
The church is also an ideal venue for concerts. Recent performances
have been given by groups such as the Con Brio String Quartet, the
Resonants, the Canberra Youth Choirs, ANU Harp Ensemble, the Oriana Chorale, Lady's Mantle,
the Monteverdi Allstars, the Real Bach Society, and
the University of Canberra Musical Society.
Groups interested in holding performances at All Saints should
contact the Administrator, Mrs Elaine Jones, on 6248 7420.
